Another Habitat Home Mortgage Paid Off!

Please join us in congratulating Sondra Porter on paying her final mortgage payment and completely owning her Habitat home as of July 11, 2020.  This is the third home built by Habitat for Humanity in Greene County.

Sondra, the mother of 5 children and 12 grandchildren, was motivated to make the final payment due to the uncertainty of Covid-19.  She did not know what she would do if she contracted the virus; subsequently, having no job or money.  Sondra was working in Habitat’s ReStore when the pandemic surfaced and the store closed temporarily; however, she continued to work at The GLEN as a private sitter.

Sondra is the proud mother of five children whose first names begin with the letter “R.”  Rafael Jernigan, Randal Jernigan, Rodricus Jernigan. Renita Jernigan and RaShondra Porter.  She loves taking care of every one of her 12 grandchildren.  Sondra gives profound thanks to Habitat and her Lord and Savior for helping her achieve this milestone.

If you get a chance, check out her beautiful yard at 102 Robbins Circle in Greensboro and place “The Yard of the month” sign there!  She can definitely be considered a master gardener.  Her hard work and dedication to her home are evident everywhere.

Edward Bolen, Executive Director of Habitat, congratulated Sondra on her accomplishment in front of her beautiful home and family.   He chose the scripture from Psalm 127:  Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain… from all indication, Sondra’s home has been covered by the blessings of God for 16 years.

Joan Antone, Habitat Board Member, congratulated Sondra in hopes that she would embrace a feeling of accomplishment, fulfillment and contentment for years to come in her OWN home.  Sondra was presented with two beautiful orchid plants for her lovely home.

Pastor Willie R.  and First Lady Tami Peete of Historic Springfield Baptist Church, chose to communicate via FaceTime from Sharpsburg, GA with congratulatory remarks. Sondra attends HSBC as a Watch Care Member.

Special thanks to the following front runners for putting a smile on Sondra’s face: Edward Bolen, Bob Pluta, Barbara Johnson, Freddie Evans and Joan Antone. Special thanks to all Board Members and spouses, future Homeowners and all Habitat supporters who attended this special event!

After acceptance into the Habitat program, each future homeowner must adhere to a rigorous mentoring process, put in a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity, and maintain an acceptable credit rating during the 18- to 24-month process before being able to purchase their home with an interest-free mortgage.
